House of Shalom bake sale to give members lesson in entrepreneurship

AMHERSTBURG — The House of Shalom Youth Centre will be holding a bake sale in a few weeks but they hope this bake sale takes a different twist.

"For this years River Lights our members have been divided into teams to take part in a fun entreprenurial exercise," explained activities co-ordinator Holly Kirk McLean. "These teams will set up at two different locations and run a bake sale. The idea with this bake sale however is not to sell as many items as they can but rather to sell each item for as much as they can. They are responsible for contacting local area businesses, town councillors and anyone else that they can entice to come to their location to pay top dollar for a tasty treat."

The two locations will be the "warming house" in Toddy Jones Park and the other will be at the Page 233 bookstore located at 233 Dalhousie St. The team that bakes the best tasting cookie, as judged by the House of Shalom's board of directors, get first choice of location. Kirk McLean said the sale will be Nov. 21 between 5-8 p.m.

"We hope to create a bit of a competition within the town to see who can outdo who! The team that makes the most profit in the end wins," said Kirk McLean. "It's kind of like Celebrity Apprentice meets the House of Shalom."

She noted that the House of Shalom aims to make the "youth of today become leaders of tomorrow." She added that she came up with the idea during her job interview with the House of Shalom in August and that members will get as much out of it as they put into it.

Kirk McLean added that all members will have a part to play in the bake sale project.

"Everybody is going to find their place in this."
