AMHERSTBURG — The SWOSSAA AAA junior girls championship basketball game will be hosted next Thursday night at General Amherst High School after the Lady Gens added another WECSSAA title to their trophy case.

Amherst moved up to the AAA division this season and still won the WECSSAA title, beating Sandwich 37-13 last Friday evening. The juniors got rolling early as they scored the game's first nine points en route to 13-4 and 26-4 leads after the first and second quarters respectively. Their defense saw the Lady Gens keep the Sabres scoreless for over a quarter as Sandwich's first basket after the first quarter came mid-way through the third quarter.

"We knew we needed to concentrate on the little things to do and if we were to focus on that, we knew we'd come away with the win," said Katie Breault, who led the Lady Gens with 17 points.

Breault said they work hard on defense and their game is built around it. She and her teammates were happy to bring home the championship.

"It feels good. We worked hard for it," said Breault.

Teammate Mackenzie Morencie agreed.

"We left nothing behind. We gave it all we got," said Morencie.

Fellow co-captain Robin Kellam added that teamwork went a long way.

"We worked together as a team," she said.

Morencie said at the beginning of the year, they had their work cut out for them because they had a lot of new players.

"Now that the season has progressed, we've really pulled together," said Morencie.

Head coach Greg Scott believed the girls controlled things well in the first half and got out to a good lead.

"That was great because the people on the bench who don't normally get into the game got a lot of playing time tonight. It was great they got to participate in the championship," said Scott.

Scott said a lot of emphasis is placed on defense.

"They same to thrive a little bit more on the zone defense and play a little bit better as a team," said Scott. "We got (Sandwich) to dribble into spots where we wanted them and dribble into traps and they turned the ball over. We got the steals. It worked out and we did a fairly good job of converting at the other end."

Sarah Bondy had seven points while Lindsay Kondracki chipped in with six points.

Next Thursday's SWOSSAA game gets underway in the Amherst gym at 7 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined.
