High school students respectful
Thursday May 08, 2008
Last week I helped supervise Mrs. Booth's Drama students from General Amherst High School, as they went on a field trip to see a play at St. Clair
College for the Arts Centre in downtown Windsor.
As wee road the bus as watched the play, I found these students to be courteous, well-mannered and appreciative.
They were respectful of property and were an excellent audience.
In this day and age when do many have little in the way of good things to say about our teenagers, I want to say that the Principal and parents should be very proud of this conduct.
A positive trend is happening at General Amherst, your local community school, where future community leaders are being raised.

Obtaining OPP would be detrimental to the community
Thursday May 08, 2008
I read in this paper that town council was considering looking into replacing our police force with the OPP Is this because of one man's opinion, is the population of the town decreasing or are our officers inferior to do the job that we as taxpayers pay them to do?
Even though Essex has chosen to go this way and other municipalities as well, I for one do think that this would be detrimental to our community.
Why? Because at this point in time if they were called upon they can be at your residence in matter of minutes and I suspect that the OPP response would be considerably longer, possibly fatally too long (God forbid!). The security of having our guys and gals near is of greater value than the cost of making decisions to the risk of present and future citizens.
Finally the question was asked by a council member about the dispatch service what would happen to it if Leamington decides to go OPP. Well why not install our own? Do we not have staff working in the station already and could they not be trained to operate the equipment? Are they not residences of the area and know most of the streets and concessions?
That makes them more experienced than some operator who don't even know where Amherstburg is let alone how to spell it.

Good sale, but could it have been held locally?
Thursday May 08, 2008
Kudos to the Rotary Club of Amherstburg, who are holding a truckload sale of composters, rain barrels and other products which enhance environmental awareness. That's a great initiative for them and I wish them well on their sale. However, the sale is being held at the Devonshire Mall in Windsor. I'm not sure it's the environmentally friendly thing to do for Amherstburg residents to make a special trip into Windsor just to attend that event. Has any consideration been given to holding a similar sale right here in Amherstburg? Maybe they could hold one at the Yard Waste Depot here in town.
